Shademaster originated in the Hunter Valley of N.S.W. in the mid 1980s, it was the first soft leaf buffalo available. It was then grown in the Sydney area from the early 1990s. However, because of its purple discolouration in winter, other soft leaf Buffalos were developed including Sir Walter.
